Packing Household Items for Storage or Moving

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Whether you are packing household items for moving or storage there are many helpful hints to make your task less daunting.  There are hints and we’ll get to those but first let’s go over the rules!

  1. USE NEW BOXES!  Recycling used boxes is an invitation to bring hitchhiking critters along with you; the boxes may have smells or be in a weakened condition.  Produce boxes from the grocery store may be free but they may also come with unwanted occupants!
  2. DO NOT PACK FOOD of any kind for a long distance move or for storage.  This is how boxes obtain those bad smells and uninvited guest critters!
  3. DO NOT PACK LIQUIDS of any kind. Containers may leak or even explode inside the box.

GENERAL PACKING TIPS

With a bit of planning and using the right packing materials you can keep the packing experience organized and less overwhelming and at the same time you are protecting your possessions from loss or damage.

  • Make a general list of items to be packed.  A list will help you determine the sizes and quantities of packing materials you’ll need.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items to prevent back strain and use larger boxes for the lighter and bulkier items.
  • Set up a packing station with all your supplies on hand.  These supplies may include:

Packing Tape

Felt Markers

Packing Paper

Bubble Wrap

Foam “Peanuts”

Boxes

  • Photograph your furniture and valuables.  This provides a visual record in case you need to make an insurance claim.
  • Pack one room at a time and pack like items together.  Pack small appliances with their accessories and instructions in separate boxes.
  • Label the boxes as you go: number each box and make a contents inventory.  If you need to retrieve something from one of your boxes in storage you can easily locate it with this system!

The Storage Neighbor  has clean and safe storage rooms of all sizes to store and protect your items and we sell all the packing supplies you’ll need to ensure a good packing experience.

Remember:  IF IT’S WORTH PACKING, IT’S WORTH PACKING RIGHT!

Choosing the right size boxes will make a world of difference when it comes time to organize your Huntsville storage unit.  First, start by purchasing boxes of the same size.  This doesn’t mean that you can only use one size box.  Instead, choose boxes of several sizes, and then use multiples of those sizes. When you can stack many boxes of the same size together, it makes it much easier to organize your storage unit in Huntsville.  Using boxes of the same size will also maximize the space inside your Huntsville storage unit.

Small boxes are great for storing CDs, DVDs, books, home décor and other small items that tend to be heavy when packed.  Medium sized boxes are perfect for kitchen utensils, small appliances, software and shoes.  Larger boxes are best for pillows, blankets, toys and anything that is large and bulky.
